The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane by Lisa See. She is a wonderful author and tells beautiful stories. I particularly like this one because it’s all about the tea growth industry and the Akha people in China. The story is beautifully and poetically told. I loved learning how a special tea “tree” is featured in this novel and the mother- daughter bonds woven through it. Reading a bio of the author is also fascinating! CS |

My First Ladies – Behind the Scenes with First Ladies Michelle Obama, Laura Bush, Hillary Clinton, Barbara Bush, Nancy Reagan and Rosalynn Carter by Nancy Clarke. For six administrations, Nancy Clarke, the White House Chief Floral Designer, designed the flowers and decorations for state dinners honoring world leaders and dignitaries. She planned the floral arrangements for the first family’s private living quarters, and for the weddings of Doro Bush and Jenna Bush. For more than twenty-five years, she created the spectacular flower displays and decorations for every White House Christmas. The stories of Nancy’s interactions with each First Lady are priceless. The book I am recommending strongly was chosen by HF&G Book Club members as well as my own. It is Robin Wall Kimmerer’s book: Braiding Sweetgrass. It struck a deep chord in all our hearts and minds. Robin (a descendant of native Americans and a college professor with a PhD in Botany) gives us the indigenous worldview where matter and spirit are of equal value. The culture of exploitation comes from objectifying other creatures, and not showing gratitude for the gifts we receive from them. My sister thanked me for telling her about this book writing: “At first I didn’t imagine I would read on to the end (it is a thick book), but it drew me along and I have allowed it to absorb my early quiet mornings and now I will spend time digesting and absorbing her many wisdoms about Mother Earth and our responsibilities and reciprocity for the days I have remaining. Such a deep and perceptive heart she has shared.” CM |
